There are traditional dishes that simply do not want to go out of style over the decades – when it comes to delicious delicacy salads, herring is at the top of the list for many! Herring fritters with cucumber, onion and spices are super quick to make and taste perfect on bread for dinner or for boiled potatoes. But: How is the fishy salad? Here’s a simple recipe – and a brilliant idea for a twist.
Herring chop as in the GDR: It tastes like it used to!
Häckerle basically consists of salted herring that is cut into very small pieces. If you want, you can also use herring fillets in oil, but these should be freed from the fatty liquid before. What you need for Herringshäckerle (basic recipe): 4 to 6 herring fillets, 2 medium-sized onions, 250 grams of cucumbers, 1 apple and about 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, salt, pepper and a little paprika powder
Here’s how: Rinse the salted herrings well and wipe with some kitchen paper. Then carefully remove any bones and cut the meat into small pieces. Peel an onion and cut it into small cubes. Chop the cucumbers as well. Peel the apple, remove the core and dice finely.

What goes in the hack? Just herring, cucumber, onion and apple!
Mix the pieces of herring, onion, apple and cucumber together in a bowl. Add mayonnaise and mix everything well. Season everything with a little salt, a little pepper and paprika powder and serve. If you like it a little low in calories, you can also use natural yogurt instead of mayonnaise.

But there are also smart variations on this classic recipe. The salad can be changed slightly by cutting two tomatoes into small cubes and putting them in the fish. Also replace the mayonnaise with two tablespoons each of vinegar and oil. Other ingredients remain unchanged. Refine the herring salad at the end with fresh chive rolls and enjoy it on bread – then the despicable Häckerle becomes a real delicacy salad! Good apetite…
